Why is 1st August the crucial cutoff date for UPSC Civil Services Examination?
As per the official notification issued by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the Civil Services Examination, 1st August of the exam year is the fixed statutory date on which the candidate's minimum and maximum age are determined. You must have attained 21 years of age and must not have crossed the maximum permissible age limit on 1st August of the relevant year.
What is the age limit and attempt relaxation for OBC, SC, ST, and PwBD candidates?
The Government of India provides the following relaxations for the UPSC Civil Services Examination:
  • General / EWS: 21 to 32 years (Maximum 6 attempts).
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 21 to 35 years (3 years relaxation, Maximum 9 attempts).
  • SC / ST: 21 to 37 years (5 years relaxation, Unlimited attempts till age limit).
  • Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD): 21 to 42 years (10 years relaxation; 9 attempts for Gen/EWS/OBC, Unlimited for SC/ST).
  • Ex-Servicemen (ECOs/SSCOs): Up to 5 years relaxation.
Does appearing in the UPSC Prelims count as an attempt?
Yes. An attempt at a Preliminary Examination is deemed to be an attempt at the Civil Services Examination. If a candidate actually appears in any one paper in the Preliminary Examination (Paper-I or Paper-II CSAT), he/she is deemed to have made an attempt at the examination. Simply applying without appearing does not count as an attempt.

What is the minimum age to be eligible for UPSC IAS/IPS?
A candidate must be at least 21 years of age on 1st August of the exam year. Even if you turn 21 on 2nd August of the exam year, you will be considered underage for that year's exam and must wait for the next cycle.
